Harris County Public Library hosts free Repair Cafe Nov. 14 at Maud Marks Branch in Houston

Harris County Public Library will host its next Repair Cafe from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Maud Marks Branch Library, giving Houston-area residents a chance to bring in broken household items and have volunteers try to fix them at no cost.
The event is open to anyone with an item that needs repair. Attendees bring what they want fixed, and volunteers examine it, diagnose the problem and attempt to repair it on site. The library has handled items including jewelry, clocks, dehydrators, lamps and stuffed animals in need of mending.
The Repair Cafe is designed to save residents money by repairing items rather than replacing them, and to keep usable goods out of landfills. Repairing instead of replacing can make a difference for small household machines. A sewing machine repair can cost more than $100, while a comparable new machine may sell for around $250, according to one attendee who brought in a Singer sewing machine whose zigzag function had stopped working.
The event also draws residents with multiple repairs in mind. At the West University event, four sewing machines had been brought in within the first hour, the attendee said.
The program is part of a broader effort by public libraries to offer practical services beyond book lending. Last month, the Texas Library Association released a study finding that Texas public libraries generate nearly $5 in economic value for every $1 invested. The Repair Cafe is one example of how Harris County Public Library extends that value into hands-on community services.
The library system encourages residents to bring in items that might otherwise be thrown away, from small electronics and clothing to household tools and keepsakes. Volunteers work with visitors directly, and participants can watch the repair process, ask questions and learn basic fixing skills.
The next Repair Cafe will take place at the Maud Marks Branch Library, located in the Harris County Public Library system. The event is free to attend, and no registration is required. Visitors are encouraged to bring only items they are comfortable attempting to repair with volunteer assistance.
Harris County Public Library has not announced whether additional Repair Cafe sessions will follow beyond the Nov. 14 event.
