Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo breaks ground on 1-million-square-foot agricultural complex along Highway 288

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo broke ground Sept. 17 on The Farm, a 1-million-square-foot agricultural complex about three miles from Reliant Park along Highway 288.

The Farm, an acronym for Furthering our Agriculture and Ranching Mission, is intended to support Texas youth, agriculture, education and Western heritage, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo said in a Sept. 17 news release. The organization said the new complex will complement its longstanding home at Reliant Park.

“As we move toward our centennial, the groundbreaking of The Farm reflects our commitment to building a world-class facility and a stronger future for Texas youth and agriculture,” Wesley Sinor, chairman of the board of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, said in the release. “The impact of what begins today will be felt for generations.”

The facility will include about 900,000 square feet of air-conditioned space and more than 800,000 square feet dedicated to indoor agriculture and equine facilities, according to the release. Plans also call for more than 1,100 livestock pens supporting multiple species, more than 800 horse stalls, about 60 wash bays with modern animal-care infrastructure and more than 200 RV hookups for exhibitors and families.

The complex was named through a multi-phase naming initiative that invited Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo volunteers to submit ideas reflecting the organization’s mission, values and future vision.

Construction is underway following the groundbreaking ceremony. The Farm is scheduled to open in March 2029, according to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s website.
