Houston newspaper The Leader to close after 70 years in print

The Leader, a community newspaper that has covered North Houston neighborhoods for more than 70 years, will shut down on April 1.

Editor Stefanie Thomas announced the closure in an article published by the outlet. The final print edition will be published on March 28. Updates on the newspaper's website and social media channels will stop one week after that publication.

The Leader is a Houston based newspaper and digital publication that covers neighborhoods including The Heights, Garden Oaks, Oak Forest and other parts of North Houston.

In her farewell article, Thomas thanked contributors, readers and local businesses that supported the publication. She wrote that the outlet covered neighborhood life, including ribbon cuttings and final farewells, and acknowledged the many people involved in reporting on local events.

The newspaper reported on community news, business openings and developments, arts and entertainment events, food and dining news, opinion pieces and local affairs.

Neighborhood papers like The Leader often cover local stories, meetings and events that larger media sources frequently underreport.

The final print edition is scheduled for March 28. The publication will cease operations on April 1.
