Rice University will launch a 30-credit master of artificial intelligence degree in fall 2027

Rice University will begin offering a master of artificial intelligence degree in fall 2027 for students with computer science training who want to work in AI engineering and research.

The university calls the degree a master of artificial intelligence, or MAI. The 30-credit-hour, nonthesis program can be completed on campus in three semesters.

Rice said the program will prepare graduates for jobs including AI and machine learning engineer, AI architect, and applied AI researcher.

The university will begin accepting applications this fall for the first class entering in 2027.

Rice Provost Amy Dittmar said the program responds to technological change and shifting employer demands.

"The MAI reflects Rice's commitment to developing graduate programs that respond to advances in technology and the changing needs of the workforce," Dittmar said in the university's announcement.

The new master's degree follows Rice's introduction of a bachelor's degree in artificial intelligence in fall 2025. The two degrees give Rice undergraduate and graduate programs in the same field.

Universities are expanding AI training as the technology spreads through everyday tools and workplace systems. Colleges are building programs intended to train students to design and deploy AI.

The degree is campus-based and structured around a set number of credit hours rather than a thesis requirement. Rice said the program focuses on coursework and technical preparation for professional roles in AI development and research.
