Houston City Council approves $2.5 million for Waugh Drive signals, sidewalks and crosswalks in the Heights

Houston City Council approved $2.5 million on Sept. 30 for a package of traffic safety projects in the Heights, including new signals at intersections along Waugh Drive, North Eldridge Parkway, North Dairy Ashford Road and Brays Bayou.
The funding covers a construction contract that also calls for a 10-foot-wide sidewalk along the south side of North MacGregor Way, according to city agenda materials. Other planned work includes curb extensions on existing pavement, crosswalk installations, ADA ramps, pavement markings, medians and rectangular rapid flashing beacons.
District C council member Joe Panzarella said several residents contacted him about safety improvements on Waugh Drive. He said the project responds to those requests.
“We are really happy to support this,” Panzarella said. “This project adds much-needed safety improvements on Waugh Drive, and I’m really excited to be able to follow and monitor this project and see it come to completion.”
The council approved the spending during its regular meeting on Sept. 30. The package funds street and intersection work that the city will complete under a single contract.
Panzarella said the contract is set for 400 days. That schedule puts the earliest completion deadline in November 2027, he said.
The projects are located in the Heights, where residents contacted Panzarella about safety improvements on Waugh Drive. The flashing beacons, curb extensions and crosswalks are part of the planned street and intersection work, and the sidewalk segment will add a walking connection along North MacGregor Way.
City Council approval allows the city to move forward with the contract. The next step is construction, and Panzarella said he will monitor the project before the earliest deadline in November 2027.
